Culross & Torryburn Church is currently looking for a new Minister:
- Is this the Parish the LORD has specially chosen for your care? Read mode using
the links below!
CULROSS - For some 1500 years, Culross has been a centre of religion and education.
It has famous links with St Serf and St Kentigern (520-612) who was later to become
St Mungo of Glasgow. The Abbey was founded in 1217 and was restored to its present
condition in 1906. Services are held every Sunday in the Abbey Church, which is now
the central place of worship and devotion in the Parish. Culross was elevated to
a Royal Burgh in 1588 and from the 16th century contained a thriving community working
the abundant coal deposits in the area and the saltpans along the shore of the river.
Nowadays the Burgh plays host to a significant number of visitors from home and
abroad who are attracted by its history, the various National Trust properties, and
the historic Abbey itself. The Abbey grounds are open daily to the public free of
charge and the Church is open to visitors most days.
BLAIRHALL - Once a thriving mining community, Blairhall is again in the process of
expanding with new housing developments being built. The village has always been
part of Culross Parish and was served by a mission church for many years. These
days, once every two weeks, worship is held in the local Fife Council offices in
the centre of the village.
HIGH VALLEYFIELD - This settlement came into being in the early 20th century with
the expansion of the coal industry. Many new and improved houses were built in the
1950s and expansion is taking place once again with the building of new private housing.
The Church is located in the centre of the village in a converted house where a
church service is held every second Sunday.
LOW VALLEYFIELD - This hamlet lies to the east of Culross and dates back to 1663.
Its population has been boosted recently with the completion of several new houses.
NEWMILLS - Situated between Low Valleyfield and Torryburn, this village was partially
developed around the former mining industry. Originally worshipping in Newmills
itself, the community is now very much part of the church at Torryburn.
TORRYBURN - This village grew up as one of the busy Forth ports in the 17th century.
The Church is located centrally and a service is held there every second Sunday.
Torryburn joined with Culross and High Valleyfield when the parishes were united
in 1983 to form the present day Culross & Torryburn Parish.
